I have a 27" 2020 iMac with 16GB memory. It has become painfully slow to upload CRAW photos to Lightroom, 28 minutes for 269 photos. Would an upgrade to 32GB help? Is 32 enough or should I get 64? If so would it be compatible with the rest of my components? Thank you.

16GB RAM is quite enough for nearly everything - the exception being video editing or loading huge files in Photoshop. Uploading files begs one question : where are you uploading from? It may be that the export speeds (i.e. read) from the source is inherently slow.

On the other hand, you say "has become", implying that it used to be faster even with 32GB? In that case you need to ask what changes you've made to your system recently. If there aren’t any, then you perhaps need to address the issue of 'speeding up my slow Mac' and there are many articles on this .

Uploading from Lexar V60 1800X card rated at 270MB/second in USB 3.0 card reader. Wifi turned off when I upload photos. It seems like it really slowed down when I started using my 32 mp Canon R7 as opposed to the 20mp R6. JPGs upload quickly into Apple's Photos, but CRAW into Lightroom Classic takes forever. I have 16GB RAM, don't know how you got the idea I ever had 32. Could the 150,000 photos in my Lightroom catalog be the issue?

Sorry, the 32GB was an error. I meant 16GB. you have changed your camera which may well account for the difference in upload speeds. I very much doubt that increasing RAM would make any difference in this situation.

iI don’t use Lightroom so can’t comment whether the number of photos makes a difference? You could create a Lightroom folder for another user on your Mac and see if uploading to an empty library is as slow, or much quicker?
